The Role of Lighting in Creating Memorable Event Photography…

Let’s talk event photography! Honestly, snapping those candid moments and nailing the perfect shot isn’t always a walk in the park for photographers. But you know what? One thing that often flies under the radar is lighting.

A lot of folks think as long as there’s enough light, the photos will turn out just fine. But let me tell you, lighting is like the unsung hero of event photography – it can make or break those stunning shots. So, in this blog, we’re gonna dive into why lighting is so darn important. And I’ll share with you 3 tips we keep in mind as your trusted Photo Booth provider…and some embarrassing mistakes we’ve made along the way. (Cringe!)

So, why’s lighting such a big deal? Well, for starters, it sets the vibe and atmosphere of the whole shebang. Whether you’re snapping a wedding, a corporate bash, or a rockin’ concert, the lighting can totally change the feel of the photos. Think soft, warm lighting for a cozy, romantic vibe, or bright, vibrant lights for some serious energy and excitement.

Now, here are three tips I’ve picked up along the way as your go-to Photo Booth provider:

  1. We scout the location in advance: Before the event, we visit the location and note the lighting conditions. Is the lighting natural or artificial? Is it bright or dim? Knowing the lighting conditions helps us prepare and bring all the necessary equipment.
  2. On event day, we adjust the camera settings to match the lighting conditions. If it’s dim, we typically bump up the ISO to let in more light. Paying attention to where the light’s coming from – we know can totally shift the mood of the photos. We also have wand lighting on standby if we need additional light to illuminate all those happy smiles. Trust us, a little attention to lighting can go a long way in making your event pics pop!
  3. Pay Attention to the Direction of Light: The direction of light can significantly impact the mood and atmosphere of the photographs. For example, backlighting can create a dramatic effect, while side lighting can highlight texture and detail. We will always suggest the best placement for our backdrop and the direction of our Photo Booth. Lastly, we place our Photo Booth close enough to the backdrop so that the photos will turn out crisp, brilliant, and full of color.

We didn’t always know how to troubleshoot lighting at events. Trust me, we’ve had our share of EMBARRASSING mistakes! For example, one party planner sweetly insisted on moving our Photo Booth back about 10 feet from the backdrop. But we know the photo captures turn out best when it is placed no more than 5 feet from the backdrop. Instead of trusting our intuition, we moved the Photo Booth back to where the party planner wanted. As a result, the photos turned out super dark and shadowy. (I’ll be honest, every time we look at those photos, we cringe!)
